Y8 Lesson Content
Employability Skills: what skills all employers are looking for and the different skills required for different jobs
Private, Public and Voluntary Sector: what different types of companies and organisations do and how they are organised.
Hidden Jobs: the jobs that people can do working for a company that you do not associate with that company (e.g. you associate Rolls Royce with engineering, not being a chef!)
Labour Market Information: what it is and why knowledge of it is essential
Using the Careers Section of the school website: what is available to students, links to other useful websites, links to online aptitude tests and resources.
Teamwork: what is teamwork and why is it an important employability skill
Presentation about a local company: Students will plan, research, prepare and deliver a presentation about a local company. The presentation should explain what the company does, whether it has only one site or several (in this country or abroad), the kinds of hidden jobs that are available and why the company is a good place to work.
The lessons incorporate the use of Skills Builder – a programme designed to help students understand what we mean by the eight different employability skills we teach them about (Listening, speaking, problem solving, creativity, staying positive, aiming high, leadership and teamwork). Each year, students work through progressively more complex examples of what each skill means, to develop their knowledge and understanding of what employers expect.
The programme of study is enhanced by enrichment activities organised within the school curriculum. Students can also attend a variety of extra-curricular activities.
